Harrow | 2019
A solo exhibition at Show Pony in Santa Fe, NM
To escape a great pain as it was inflicted upon me when I was young, I once stared so hard at the night sky that it swallowed me whole and transported me into a safe place in the future. In that moment I understood trauma as time travel and have since worked to capture this elusive expression of time and the echoes of a fractured self through my art and music.
When, many years later, I found myself confronting this internal divide against the backdrop of a new, reflected trauma, I was compelled to chronicle its unfolding in real time through a visual album. Leaning into my synesthesia and blurred lines between sound, color and texture, ‘Harrow’ was first composed in thematic color palettes, upon which was built a dual visual/sonic language heavy in symbology, nature & metaphor to bring this internal space to light.
Harrow is a work engaging the world much like its namesake, a word defined as both the implement itself and the recipient of its action. These illustrations and their companion songs are a record of reckoning and the act of reckoning itself, and in the wake of such disruption, as with the harrowed ground and harrowed body, a space where new life might take hold.
